The chief officer of a merchant ship is the ship’s captain’s deputy, also known as the chief officer of the deck or simply the second in command. As such, he is called upon to replace the captain when necessary. The chief officer is an experienced seaman who is one of the ship’s senior officers and has decision-making and organisational powers on board. The position of chief officer has evolved with the specialisation of ships and the diversification of maritime commercial activities.
