Chief Engineer

Diploma – STCW Certificate of Competencies

– A-III/3 (vessels < 3000 KW)
– A-III/2 (vessels > 3000 KW)

The chief engineer manages and supervises the engine crew members: engine officers, electrician, oiler etc.

They are in charge of preventive and corrective maintenance. They must make sure that engines are in good order 24h/7days to provide the necessary mechanical and electrical powers for the operations of the vessels.

The main engine ensures the propulsion of the vessel and the secondary engines provide electricity for equipment on-board:

– Mechanical: fans, compressors, pumps, hydraulic systems, etc.
– Thermal: heater, air-conditioner, reefer etc.
– Electronical: navigation system, radar, computers, etc
– Equipment dedicated to cargo and shipping operations.

The Chief Engineer is autonomous and is under the authority of the Master. He reports to him any incident, dysfunction, damage or repairs in progress or planned.

The Chief engineer can be in contact with technical department ashore to find solutions in case of complex issues.
Required skills:

Considering the diversity of merchant marine vessels, the Chief Engineer must be able to adapt to the various engine power and on-board technologies required by each activity:

– Cargo ships (oil/chemical tankers, container ships, bulk carrier, general cargo carrier, car carriers…)
– Transport of passengers (car-ferries, cruises etc.)
– Specialized marine activities (oceanographic or seismic research, exploration or operating offshore, laying submarine cables, marine materials extraction etc.)

A chief Engineer must have the following skills:

– Various technical skills and knowledge
– Long experience in engine room as officer
– Know how to delegate activities and manage crew members
– Capacity of analysis, investigation
– Take decisions rapidly
